Delicious West Australian Rock Oysters sustainably farmed in the remote pristine waters of the Abrolhos Islands.

Our Story

2017

Abrolhos Island Oysters originated from a love of the Abrolhos Islands located 60km from the Geraldton coast and a desire to develop a sustainable industry there. Josh & Justin set out to do something no-one else had tried before. After extensive research on possible economic activity based at the islands, they decided to set up an oyster farm.

Justin engineered a spat collector which he deployed in the turquoise waters for 6 months. Unfortunately, the equipment only managed to collect coral. During that time, Josh & Justin also did several trips to the islands to collect broad stock and attempted to generate spat in a controlled environment.

2018 - 2020

Josh & Justin decided to partner with the Department of Fisheries for a trial using Milkies spat from the Albany Shellfish Hatchery. This trial was tightly controlled, with Fisheries requesting regular reports on salinity testing, water temperature, water movements, basket densities and arrangements. However this heavily controlled trial was also unsuccessful. Another blow to Josh & Justin’s dream.

In 2019, applications are lodged to build infrastructure at Newman Island, in the Pelsaert Group.

2021

Three years have passed since Josh & Justin took a leap of faith to follow their Island dream, and still no success at farming oysters… But 2021 is a good year and marks the start of oyster farming success with the decision to source Sydney rock spat.

In February, construction of the jetty starts.

2022 - 2023

2022 is spent nurturing and growing the Sydney Rock spat into adult oysters. Years of trials and errors and perseverance are finally paying off.

By 2023, the jetty, processing shed and a 3 bedroom camp are built at Newman Island, and the business successfully applies for a RED Grant to help fund the construction of a processing facility in Geraldton.

The Dream is definitely real.
